4 ways space design impacts restaurant and bar revenue

February 4, 2018 by Shane Curran Leave a Comment

Most people eat with their eyes first. As such, food that look great on photos are really effective in enticing customers to order certain dishes. Bar and drinking establishment owners also use the same technique to encourage patrons to try new concoctions or beverages on their menu.

Representatives from leading restaurant interior design companies say that you can also use this same principle on your restaurant or bar interior design to get more customers and ultimately, boost your income and profits.

The interior design of a dining or drinking establishment is one of the key factors that influence customer satisfaction. And when guests like your interior, they tend to stay longer in your premises, order more, and you can count on them to return. These, in turn, translate to an increase in revenue.

Here are some specific ways the interior design influences the income of restaurants, bars, and other drinking establishments:

1. Colors affect customer behavior

Psychologists say that the color of an establishment’s interiors plays an important role in the behavior of customers.

● Green, for instance, is a color associated with nature and calm. When a dining establishment has this color for its interiors, customers are often inspired to eat healthy and well-balanced food.

This is something that can increase your revenue if your restaurant specializes in organic, healthy, or vegan cuisines.

● Interiors with dark, earthy colors, when painted or added on walls with light shades and combined with a little warm lighting help customers feel relaxed and want to stay longer.

This is an interior design concept that will work well in bars; if your customers feel comfy inside, they will order more drinks so that they can enjoy the ambiance and each other’s company more.

● Colors with darker shades such as red, maroon, orange, and brown tend to boost the appetite of diners.

As such, they are great colour options for fine dining restaurants which specialize in multi-course meals.

2. Space design works as an effective USP

Today, restaurants and bars have many similarities in terms of their menu offerings and the dining or drinking experience they provide. As such, it can be hard to stand out. Your interior design, though, can become your unique selling proposition (USP) and be the primary reason why customers will want to visit your restaurant again.

In general, customers today are always looking for new experiences.  A fresh and unique restaurant or bar interior design will easily catch their attention. If your restaurant interiors have a distinct and remarkable design, people will be talking about it, not just the food.

For example, having a medieval theme, or a theme representative of a timeless piece of literature or pop culture icon, means guests won’t just come to your establishment for food and drinks but will also be there for its ambiance and visual appeal.

Your space design will also be your selling point in getting new customers online. With amazing photos of your restaurant interiors posted on your website and through social media shares, you will entice people to visit your establishment.

Of course, an increase in new customers means an increase in income and higher chances of boosting patronage which translates to higher revenue.

3. The layout can make customers linger

Your establishment’s layout should allow servers to move easily and safely with food and beverages on hand. It should also enable customers to move in and out of the restaurant or bar freely and give them enough elbow room.

In addition, dining and drinking areas and other rooms with specific functions have to be decided in such a way that the seating space is maximized without compromising customers’ level of comfort. The interior design should focus on the comfort and enjoyment of your guests while maintaining an efficient circulation pattern for them and the servers.

When customers are comfortable in your establishment, they will be more than willing to spend extra on additional orders. And when your customers order more, you’ll enjoy higher sales and profits.

4. Lighting sets the ambiance

Lastly, lighting will create the right mood and soothing atmosphere that will encourage guests to linger. Dim lights, often used by fine dining establishments and bars, give a more relaxing and comfy vibe. Low lights also work well in getting couples to dine or drink in the establishment since they will view the place as romantic and perfect for a date.

The ideal lighting can encourage customers to stay in their seats to enjoy the ambiance and order more.  Again, this translates to more sales and higher revenue.

If you’re having a hard time coming up with an appropriate and impressive design to significantly boost your sales, consider working with interior designers and interior fit-out companies. They will help you come up with the ideal space design that will enable you to keep your dining or drinking establishment relevant and popular, now and in the future.
