Hi my name is Ivan
This website is dedicated to my passion: food, wine, meeting interesting people, telling stories and writing.
Food and Wine Gazette started in September 2014 though my passion for food, wine and writing dates back much longer.
I’ve lived for most of my life in the Mediterranean island of Malta before moving to Belgium so you will find a certain emphasis on all things Mediterranean as well as Belgium here. But of course, the world is small and I don’t limit myself to only Belgium and my home country.
Here on Food and Wine Gazette, I try to bring my perspective on the food and wine world. I cover events, interview chefs, producers, entrepreneurs in the food and wine world and always try to find a unique angle.
Over the past years, I have interviewed some of the world’s best chefs. You can find these interviews in a dedicated page. In these interviews, I try to look at what inspires them, their cooking philosophy, their work as entrepreneurs, activists, cooks and how they go about their creative process. Chefs today are not just cooks, they are also artists, personalities, entrepreneurs and in some cases even celebrities. They are people with interesting stories, driven by passion with an incredible work ethic. In these interviews, I believe many lessons can be drawn from then and applied in different fields.
Food and Wine Gazette is also a place where you can find news about what is going on in the world of gastronomy. Here you will find news on restaurant openings, events, awards and much more.
A few words about me. My first job and my first passion was journalism. Professionally, I’ve covered pretty much everything from sports (that’s where I started) to news, business, politics, crime and pretty much anything in between. But before starting Food and Wine Gazette I had never thought of combining my passion for food and wine and write about it. I had actually stopped writing for a good 12 years. Once I started writing again, I realised how much I had missed it.
I do this in my free time so time is a constraint. I’d love to do so much more but with a full-time job and a family that’s not easy.
I’ve been eating my way through Europe and beyond for nearly 20 years now and I started Food and Wine Gazette with the aim of putting to pen some of my favourite discoveries. Here I share my thoughts on food and wine. If it features on Food and Wine Gazette, you can rest assured that it is something that I like, whether it is a restaurant, a wine, chocolates or a patisserie.
As you will see, I am highly opinionated about certain issues and my philosophy is based on the fact that there can be no such thing as “the best meal or wine in the world.” I believe that there are people doing great work to raise awareness on important issues such as food waste, obesity, the importance of cooking with fresh ingredients and given I share this philosophy I have a certain bias towards people who are passionate about this like us.
